Apple is working on a new Apple TV to release next year – Nikkei

A few rumors hint that Apple is working on a new Apple TV that will be released by the company next year.

According to Nikkei Asia, the Cupertino tech giant has asked suppliers to build approximately 95 million to 96 million iPhones, including the iPhone SE and iPhone 12. The full-year forecast that Apple shared with its suppliers suggests that the company plans to build up to 230 million iPhones in 2021, consisting of both new and old models.

Over the past few months, rumors have been circulating regarding a new Apple TV ever since the unreleased device was spotted in an iOS 13.4 beta. At that time, reports hinted that the new Apple TV would come in 64 and 128GB storage sizes and feature an A12 chip. Nikkei stated:

Apple is also preparing an aggressive production schedule for its high-end computers, including the MacBook Pro and iMac Pro, for 2021, two other people familiar with the matter said. The company is in the midst of replacing Intel central processors in its computer lineups with self-designed CPUs built using technology from British chip designer Arm. Apple already introduced three MacBook models powered by its M1 central processor in late 2020 and announced it will take about two years to fully transition to CPUs designed in-house. The U.S. tech giant is also working on a new Apple TV, a home entertainment device for video-on-demand services, for next year, one of the people said.

While some people were anticipating that Apple would release a new Apple TV as a winter surprise earlier in December, reports from prominent Apple leakers confirmed the opposite.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Jon Prosser stated that there is no Apple TV releasing until next year.

Prosser recently suggested that Apple TV might feature a U1 chip that will enable Ultra Wideband support for improved spatial awareness between devices. There is very little known about what the new Apple TV might bring to the table apart from its codename ‘Neptune’, and that includes storage capacities, possible remote changes, and updated chip.

The rumors about the discrepancy in chips that might be used could be because Apple is working on various set-top boxes. Note that Apple has not updated the existing Apple Tv 4K since September of 2017.
