iPhone Duo Passes 100,000 Optimized Apps Two Weeks After Launch

Over 100,000 iPhone Duo apps are now live on the App Store, as per the latest update from Apple. The company named about 50 launch apps in its October 22 announcement, and thousands of optimized apps are now being added to the App Store every day.

Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, shared the numbers in a new statement two weeks after the phone went on sale on October 23. That means more of the apps on your iPhone Duo can fill the inner display instead of running with black bars.

“It’s been wonderful to see how quickly developers have embraced iPhone Duo, and we’re grateful for their creativity and innovation. Today there are well over 100,000 apps built for iPhone Duo already live on the App Store, and thousands of optimized apps are being added to the store each day.

“In the last month alone, thousands of developers have joined us for workshops in 19 cities around the world to experience iPhone Duo firsthand and bring updated apps to their users. The enthusiasm has been incredible, and we’re excited to see the pace of updates continue to accelerate as more and more apps optimize for iPhone Duo.”

Developers Need the iOS 27.1 SDK to Optimize iPhone Duo Apps

An app counts as optimized for the iPhone Duo when a developer builds it with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later. Those apps fill the whole display, with toolbars and tab bars moving to a vertical bar below the status bar, so developers also have to check that their content still fits once the bars turn vertical.

For many existing apps, the first step is to recompile with Xcode 27.1, which lets developers test every pose in Device Hub. The 5.4-inch outer display and the 7.6-inch inner display share one aspect ratio, so an app scales proportionally when you open or close the phone and you pick up where you left off.

You can spot optimized apps by the Made for iPhone Duo badge on App Store product pages. Apple also runs editorial collections for iPhone Duo apps and games in the App Store.

Zoom, Microsoft Word and Halide Mark III Have Updated Since Launch

Zoom Workplace got its iPhone Duo layout in version 7.2.5, more than a week after the phone went on sale. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote have been updated as well.

Halide Mark III added iPhone Duo support in version 3.3.0 on October 26, with a different layout for each pose. On the closed phone it switches to a squarish layout with an unobstructed viewfinder. Fully open, it shows your latest photo beside the camera so you can favorite, share or delete it.

Partially open, one tap moves the camera into a waist-level viewfinder. The latest version, 3.3.3, lets you hide the photo reviewer when the phone is fully open.

Readdle updated all five of its apps, including Spark and PDF Expert, with side-by-side layouts, and Notability now shows its library in two panes on the inner display.

The next push comes from App Store Connect, which requires iPhone Duo screenshots on every app or game submission starting in April 2027.
