Twitter is shutting down ‘Fleets’ stories feature on Aug 3

Twitter has announced that it is removing ‘Fleets‘ from the app because of lower than expected response. Inspired by Snapchat and Instagram Stories, Fleets is designed for sharing temporary thoughts, feelings, images, or clips on the app that disappear after 24 hours. For a more interactive and entertaining experience, users can also react to Tweets and customize their Fleets background.

The whole idea was to give users another outlet to express those momentary thoughts and feelings we have while driving, doing dishes, gardening, and right before bed. At the time of launch in November 2020, Twitter described it as:

Some of you tell us that Tweeting is uncomfortable because it feels so public, so permanent, and like there’s so much pressure to rack up Retweets and Likes That’s why, unfortunately, there are so many 🔥 Tweets left in drafts! To help people feel more comfortable, we’ve been working on a lower pressure way for people to talk about what’s happening. Today, we’re launching Fleets so everyone can easily join the conversation in a new way – with their fleeting thoughts.

Twitter confirms the removal of Fleets from the app

The company announced the decision on its official account on Twitter. From August 3, Fleets will no longer be available on the app. Answering users’ queries, the company explained that the feature did not create the expected impact.

We hoped Fleets would encourage more people to join the conversation, but that wasn’t the case. So we’re removing them and focusing on improving other parts of Twitter.

Having said that, users were told that new features are coming their way. A glimpse of what the company might release on the app was shared earlier by the company and some features were discovered by reverse engineers.

The company shared the concept of ‘unmention‘, ‘Trusted Friends’, ‘Facets’ and ‘Reply Preference‘ features. Tweet Reactions and audio-chat capability for Spaces on the web features were discovered.
