“Apple View” concept shows the design of Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset

Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset is getting regular mentions in various reports and leaks, and it seems that it is just a matter of waiting until it is revealed in 2022. Creator Ian Zelbo has come up with new a new design concept for the mixed reality headset dubbed “Apple View”, which imagines how it will look based on leaks first shared by The Information.

Ian’s concept is inspired by The Information’s report but it uses merges the design with something which can be best described as a ski mask crossed with AirPods Max’ headband.

As someone who has an Oculus Quest 2, and has been covering the reports and leaks for Apple’s headset, it will be amazing if Apple is able to nail a design similar to what Ian has envisioned. But if I had to bet on it, I think it will be highly unlikely that APple could fit everything in such a sleek form factor.

The Quest 2 is perhaps the most popular virtual reality headset right now, and it does not have proper mixed-reality functionality similar to Microsoft’s Hololens. Looking at either of these headsets would give you an idea that they take up a lot of space, and Apple would have to pull out some magic tricks to make its headset smaller.

As per reports, Apple’s mixed reality VR/AR headset will feature powerful silicon that might rival Mac-level performance. The headset will feature Fresnel’s hybrid ultra-short focal length lenses and OLED displays with 3,000 PPI. The focus areas for the mixed-reality headset will include gaming, communication, and media consumption.

The headset will have different input methods which will include hand gesture detectioneye trackingiris recognition, voice control, skin detection, facial expression detection, and spatial detection, as well as 15 camera modules.

Apple’s first mixed-reality headset is expected to go into production in Q4, 2022, which means that the launch timeframe will be around late 2022 to early 2023. It is expected to cost between $1,000 to $3,000 as per different reports.

The company is already working on a second-gen headset for 2024, which will feature a lighter design, improved battery, and faster performance. Apple is also working on AR glasses, which will launch further in the future, and will possibly be CEO Tim Cook’s last major product launch.
