Apple seeded iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 beta 5 to developers, two weeks after iOS 27 beta 4. The release is available over the air and developers can grab it from Settings > General > Software Update on compatible devices.
Beta 5 marks the point in the cycle where Apple’s focus moves away from new features and toward bug fixes and performance work. New betas are now expected on a weekly cadence rather than the two-to-three-week gaps that defined the earlier part of the cycle.
The tighter cadence matters most for developers with apps that rely on iOS 27-specific APIs, particularly the new Siri AI integration points and the expanded Apple Intelligence frameworks covering Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, Wallet, and Passwords. Weekly betas give developers a faster feedback loop on API stability, but they also mean more frequent regression testing and a compressed window to finalize submissions before the GM drops. Anyone planning an app launch alongside iOS 27 should treat the next four to five weeks as the critical path.
Background indexing is worth keeping in mind for anyone running the beta. Siri AI requires indexing personal data from apps like Messages and Mail to function fully, and that process runs in the background on first install, which can affect perceived performance. Apple moved some of that work upstream by shipping indexing support in iOS 26.6, so users who updated to that release before jumping to iOS 27 should see less of that slowdown than those upgrading cold.
iOS 27 supports all devices that ran iOS 26, meaning iPhone 11 and later are all eligible. The headline additions include Siri AI, a chatbot-style assistant with general world knowledge and onscreen awareness, along with Apple Intelligence improvements across Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, Wallet, and Passwords, and a standalone Siri app that maintains conversation history across sessions.
The Siri AI onscreen awareness feature has particular relevance, since it can read and act on content inside third-party productivity apps without requiring those apps to build explicit Siri shortcuts.
