iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 compatible devices – Support dropped for iPhone 8, iPhone X and more

Apple recently unveiled iOS 17 for the iPhone lineup and iPadOS 17 for the iPad lineup alongside watchOS 10, tvOS 17, and macOS Sonoma. Unfortunately, there are some iPhone and iPad models which are not compatible with Apple’s next-generation software updates.

Here is a full list of compatible iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 devices.

iOS 17 brings a bunch of new features to compatible iPhone models. The software introduces personalized Contact Posters and Live Voicemail for the Phone app, as well as audio and video reactions for FaceTime calls. The Messages app receives improvements, including enhanced search, swipe-to-reply, and transcribed audio messages. A new NameDrop feature facilitates sharing of contact information between nearby iPhones.

The keyboard offers improved autocorrect and personalized predictions, while the new Journal app promotes reflection and gratitude. StandBy mode displays personalized information in landscape mode, and Siri gains enhanced voice activation. Other additions include Safari privacy enhancements, mental health features in the Health app, offline maps in Maps, and new features for AirTag and Home app.

iPadOS 17 includes a customizable Lock Screen with interactive widgets and rich photo features. The software update improves PDF handling and introduces new features in the Notes app. Messages and FaceTime receive enhancements, such as Live Stickers and in-line message replies.

Safari offers productivity features and improved search capabilities. The Health app debuts on iPad, providing detailed health insights. Other additions include Stage Manager, Freeform drawing tools, Spotlight improvements, and enhanced keyboard and Siri functionality. Privacy updates, accessibility tools, and specific features for iPad Pro are also included.

If your iPhone or iPad is not compatible with iOS 17 or iPadOS 17, do not worry. You will still receive security updates for a handful of years.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will be made available in the fall alongside the announcement of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. Apple has released the first developer beta for both software updates and a public beta will become available in July.
